The Mac Pro with Xeon processor features Error Correcting Code (ECC) RAM Memory. Hardware in the Xeon Processor checks each word (64 data + 8 syndrome bits) and can correct single bit errors in Hardware in one stretched memory cycle. Errors are noted, and a background process tabulates them. You can examine them while the system continues to run.

Double-bit errors are almost always uncorrectable, and are intended to cause a kernel panic, with either 'machine check', or the exact error message you got.

You can look at which modules are getting correctable errors, and try to catch them before a double-bit error occurs by using this STATIC report:

Go about your business, and invoke or refresh thai report every hour or so. Modules generating errors are BAD.

You should look for DIMMs that are producing correctable Errors in your daily use, and replace those. They are the ones that will eventually cause double-bit errors that halt your Mac on a Kernel Panic.

You should also replace any whose slots show as "empty" or that show 1/2 their actual size, and those are also bad.

You should get rid of any less than 1GB DIMMs, as these make too much heat and do not add enough additional RAM to be worth keeping.

Jul 6, 2015 12:50 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Installed new RAM, all 16 gigs worth, and it still crashes. It boots up for a minute or 2 and then the monitors go blank. I've tried it with 1 and 2 monitors and in different ports on the card and still get the same results. Once the monitors go blank, I hold the start button until it shuts down and the restart it. It chimes, but goes to a blank screen (black) right after.

Could this be the video card and not the RAM as once thought?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I really need to get this machine up and running.

Jul 7, 2015 10:59 AM in response to Taiko713

The panic report you posted originally was a FBDIMM RAM Memory panic.

If you are seeing different symptoms after changing RAM DIMMs -- this may be a similar or a completely different problem.

I recommend when installing new RAM that you start with 2 DIMMs, then the other 2 DIMMs, then all together. This separates the problem of "Does these DIMMs work at all?" from "Do all these DIMMs play nice together?"

Jul 7, 2015 2:57 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I installed the new RAM, first 1x1 and the system was up for about 3 minutes. I checked the DIMMS and they were OK. I tried to reboot and got as far as the chime.

The following report was from the previous time (yesterday) with new RAM:

There is a rare but vexing problem that sometimes affects these Macs. The NorthBridge chip (that connects the memory to the processor, among other things) is secured with two plastic pins. If either of these pins breaks, it releases some pressure on the NorthBridge chip, it gets wiggly, and it gets very Hot, and can cause flaky problems such as memory errors.
