hard drive caddy for MacBook Pro late 2011

I have a late 2011 and I tried to add a hard drive instead the optical drive. long story short, the drive test fine before and after the install using an external caddy. once installed internally, the drive fails repeatedly. After it fails, Disk utility cannot mount it, and when it can (after I open the the back, disconnect, and reconnect).

I restored the optical drive end everything works- videos are playing, hardware recognized, no issues.

the hardware:

harddrive: HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache Mobile retail kit

Caddy: Hard Drive Caddy Tray for Apple Unibody MacBook / MacBook Pro 13 15 17 SuperDrive (Replacement Only)

Interestingly, looking at the reviews, most complains are from owners of late 2011 MacBook pro.

any ideas? are there differences in caddies, and which one will work?

Thanks!!

update: I found this-

"The late 2011 MBP uses sata III (6G) to interface the factory optical drive. However, it doesn't work with a sata III hard disk, although the disk can be recognized correctly by OS. The OS constantly fails to format the disk. Two solutions for this problem: a) get an older disk drive that uses sata I or II interface; b) use jumpers to limit the disk to sata I 1.5G (haven't tested this method yet)."

any thoughts about this?
