My Apple Watch Workout App stopped during exercise

I have been using Apple Watch for a couple of weeks. I use the Workout App during outdoor hiking. It worked well initially with OPEN setting. However, for the past few days, the Workout App stopped during my hiking without any input from me. I tried to use the Time duration setting instead of OPEN, it stopped in the middle as well without finishing my set time of 80 minutes. In all cases, I pressed Resume, it stopped again after a short time.

I re-booted the Watch, the problem persists.

Any suggestion as what is the reason for this and method to fix it? Is this a software issue or hardware issue? Thanks for your help!

I just found this solution as I’ve been having the same problem. While it doesn’t fix things, it explains why they’re happening to me.

If you want it to Auto Pause a workout when you stop moving:

1)

Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone and navigate to the My Watch → Workout section.

2)

Slide the Running Auto Pause switch to the ON position.

“When this is on, indoor and outdoor running workouts

will automatically pause when you stop moving and resume when you start moving,” notes Apple.

If you leave this setting OFF, your workout will pause if you press both the Digital Crown and Side Button (like taking a screenshot). Apparently this happens to me when do push ups or other similar movements where my wrist bends and can press the buttons without my knowledge.

Hi

The behaviour that you have described may be caused by your watch losing contact with your wrist during sports activity, causing your watch to conclude that it has been removed from your wrist. This will cause the Workout app to pause automatically.

During exercise, Apple Watch should be worn snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening your band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards.

Also: to avoid accidental interactions with your watch's screen during workouts - which may include pausing workouts or ending them early - you can lock the screen. At any time after starting a workout, press firmly on the display and tap on Lock. When you are ready to end the workout, press firmly again and first tap on Unlock.
