It sounds like you haven't been able to connect to your email account on your iPhone 5 in several days.

In your case, I'd start with this advice:
"Cannot get mail"
Make sure that you're entering the right password. If you turned on two-step verification through your email service provider, contact them to see if you need a special password for your iOS device.
To make sure that you're entering the right password, go to Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap your email account.
