Cannot update/restore iPod--Error code (-48)

Hello! I've been having problems with my nano lately--everytime I try to update/restore it (using the new version of iTunes), it gives me the error "Cannot update iPod. An unknown error occurred (-48)." I've searched the internet and cannot find what this error code means (I'm using a PC). It won't let me look at the music on the iPod (which seems to not be playing correctly when headphones are plugged in). The iPod itself isn't giving me any sad faces or anything.. I'm at a loss! I've tried using different USB ports and even purchased a new cable. Nothing is working. I've tried the five Rs that I can do and I'm beginning to become pretty frustrated. I'm not using Mcafee. Any help would be appreciated.

I had problems with error -48, unable to update and eject, files in use etc. Nothing would work, even spent 3 hours on phone to Apple tech support, they couldn't fix it either. In desperation I performed an Archive and Install which at time of writing has worked, Nano 8gb now working perfectly for the first time since purchase. Procedure was easy and all network settings etc can be retained, even my iTunes library remained intact. Remains to be seen whether this is a permanent fix, but so far so good.
