Insert your Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and try performing a custom installation of it; if that component doesn’t appear in the list, use Pacifist to extract it manually. In either case, run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater and all applicable security updates afterwards.

If you reinstall 10.6.x via the install DVD and then update 10.6.8 via Software Update, the Mail app will be reinstalled.
Thing is, the computer rejected the DVD. No idea why. And Pacifist requires 10.8
I installed the combo update but no sign of a Mail application.
All this seems to sound like my system has lost something important and I may to start again.
What model Mac Mini do you have?
How much memory?
The 2009 and later can go to Yosemite
The 2007 to Lion
The 2006 is stuck at Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Likely the optical drive has failed.
Do have an external USB DVD drive you can use?
I can't find the date (the TM says 1983 - 2011). I bought it used in 2012 (and he done me wrong) so I imagine it's 2009
The model is Macmini 3,1
I don't see the balance of GB. 4 is in the overview but that's the original
I'll try to load Yosemite
Thanks
Yes, you have a 2009 Mini and that can go to Yosemite.
Although Apple says 2G of memory is sufficient more is really needed. Your Mini can accept 8 GB (2x4 GB)
Yosemite has ruined my MacBook and I need to get rid of it. Where can I download Mavericks and how can I throw out Yosemite?
I have followed a lot of instructions to Restart, Partition, etc but none have offered to reinstall anything, only Yosemite. I have cleaned out my MacBook
and just need to get a good system, 10.9 (Mavericks).
It's been a long, frustrating period of fighting with Yosemite but I didn't know
what the problem was until yesterday. Now I can't wait to get a good computer again.
Appreciate your help. Bear in mind there is no other system in my computer but Yosemite.
Thanks
If you never "purchased" Mavericks before it is not available to you.
You can go to Yosemeite, Elcapitan or you can purchase about $20 Lion or Mountain ion.

After you download the install you make a bootable USB media with
Then boot form that and format the stratup disk and install.
Tried to buy Mtn Lion but Apple won't sell it to a Canadian!
I did have Mavericks but it's not there now. And Apple ensures you can't get it again. Not a nice company. Once Yosemite got into my computer it was like a disease and it destroyed everything.
The Chat Line tells me I can't go back. But I think I can: throw out Yosemite and install a CD like Mtn Lion.
Someone in this organization must have the decency to fix the mess they created and they should readily sell, or do the right thing and give me a CD that will offer a clean system to use every day.
Did you "purchase" Mavericks before?
If so it should be listd in the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. All my previously purchased OSX upgrades are.
Do any purchases shot up?
Is the Mac App Store signed into the account that purchased them?
There is no CD/DVD for Lion and later. They are all just downloads. Some original Macs that came with Lion came with a USB drive with the Lion installer.
