Q: Merging/Deleting iPhoto & Photos Libraries

Did the upgrade from iPhoto to Photos and now I have the 2 "soft linked" libraries for each app.  Now I'm ready to completely remove iPhoto and its old library - can I just delete these 2 without affecting Photos?  Or is there some sort of merging process I need to do instead?

Also, since upgrading to Photos, I've put all my originals up in the cloud.  Would it be easier to delete both iPhoto/Photos libraries, reset my prefs and such for Photos, and then re-download everything from the cloud?

now I have the 2 "soft linked" libraries for each app.

I assume you mean hard linked - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

And do you mean that you migrated two different iphoto libraries to Photos?

In any case as noted in the article I linked to

After you migrate your iPhoto or Aperture library to Photos, you might feel tempted to delete your original iPhoto or Aperture library. Because the migrated library takes little additional space, you don't need to delete the original library.

You certainly can delete them if you wish but Apple's (and the experienced users here) advice is not to for a while just in case you need them for any reason

As to your specific question yes you can just delete them and it will not affect Photos in any way (or reduce storage requirements much either)

    and as to

Why? - that is just asking for the computer gods to crap on you and dump all your photos - Yes it will work unless something goes wrong - but things do go wrong and I would not risk my photos that way

Thanks for the reply, LarryHN.  My thoughts...

You assume correct...that was a typo on my part.

No, I did not merge two iPhoto libraries.  All I have currently is 1 iPhoto Library and 1 Photos library.  I did the upgrade back when Photos was initially released, so I've parsed my collection multiple times and backed it up for safety.  Just wondering if it is safe to delete the old iPhoto library at this point.

I'm thinking ahead to the next time I do a clean OS install on my MacBook and when I purchase a Mac Mini in the future.  It would seem that on a new system, the easiest way to start "fresh" with a clean library would be to let the system sync with what's up on the cloud.  I did this precise thing with my iTunes library and iTunes Match and it worked great.

    Again

Yes - unless something goes wrong - I am fighting an iTunes Match download problem right now on my new MBA

It probably will work 99.999% of the time with out a hitch but again IMHO

that is just asking for the computer gods to crap on you and dump all your photos - Yes it will work unless something goes wrong - but things do go wrong and I would not risk my photos that way
