In Messages, how do I save the alert setting? Keeps defaulting to "when I log in" but there's several other options.

I've tried to change my alert setting in Messages to "when messages received". However, the setting keeps defaulting back to "when I log in". How do I save the alert setting?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), iOS 10.8.5, Mtn Lion
