Q: OS X wont boot. circle with dash though it.

Firstly im gonna state some system information.

-mid 2012 13" MBP

-16 GB of after market RAM made by crucial

-500GB SSD also made by crucial

-SSD was partitioned half and half as OS X yosemite, and windows 7 via bootcamp.

So heres the issue, when i attempt a normal boot to OS X i get a grey screen that has a circle with a line through it. HOWEVER, if i attempt to boot to windows 7 i get a normal boot and everything works just fine. To me this rules out hardware failure because the SSD functions fine with windows, but maybe im wrong on that idk. IV tried a number of solutions so before you go asking, heres what iv tried so far.

-reset of PRAM

-reset of SMC

-boot in safe mode

-iv repaired and verified my SSD with disk utility.

-I wiped the partition and reinstalled OS X mavericks from startup recovery

and despite all this my mac still wont boot in that partition. when i boot it in verbose mode it simply repeats "waiting for root device" this is a weird one. I have no idea where to turn here and I'm at the end of my knowledge rope. ideas?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Are there any pending SSD Firmware updates for your SSD? Can you post the exact model number/part number of the SSD?

If the Windows installation corrupted or overwrote the disk partition headers, you will see this problem. Was Windows installed using EFI Boot or was Windows Diskpart utility used to manipulate the internal disk in any way?

If Windows boots correctly, download http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ and run it from a CMD widow. Change directory to the location of the Gdisk executables and run the command gdisk32.exe 0: or gdisk64.exe 0: and use 'p'(rint) to post the disk layout. The other option is to install OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support and boot from it which allows installing of Gdisk and inspection the partition layout.

Thanks a Million for your reply! but right now I don't have the machine. I took it to my local geek squad service and they are running some hardware analysis to see if its just a hardware failure. If it is then I'm getting a new hard drive because its still under warranty. As soon as my machine is back ill attempt to follow your instructions and we shall see. I'll let you know the outcome. Also I used boot camp to install the windows 7 partition no diskpart or UEFI work has ever been done on that machine by me.
