Is it possible to recover photos from an iPod 5 after restore?

I had to do a restore on my son's iPod Touch 5. I did not back up his photos before restoring. Apparently, they were not backed up to iCloud either. Any chance of getting these back? I'm seeing recovery software out there, but not sure if it's effective if there's been a restore to the device.
