It sounds like you just want to turn off the notification for updating Final Cut Pro. One way to get the App Store to stop providing notifications that an update is available for a particular application is outlined here in the following Knowledge Base article:
Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support
Hide your purchases
If you hide an item you purchased in the Mac App Store, you won't get update notifications for it, and you won't see it on your Purchases page. If you're using Family Sharing, hidden items will also be hidden from your family members.
Use these steps on OS X Mountain Lion or later:
- Open the Mac App Store.
- Choose Store > Sign In, then enter your Apple ID and password.
- Click Purchases.
- Right-click the item that you want to hide and choose Hide Purchase. A prompt will ask if you're sure that you want to hide the item.
- Click the Hide Purchase button. The item will fade. The item below it, if there is one, will replace it in the list.
Thanks for being a part of Apple Support Communities.
Kind Regards,
Pedro.

It's helpful to know about hiding things I've purchased in the App, thanks. But no I'm not so worried about updating FCP by mistake, I'm not being prompted to do that. I can't run a later version on FCP (ie 10.1) on the machine because I haven't got enough memory, and as soon as I install Yosemite my current FCP won't run, because Apple in their great wisdom, have made it impossible to run any earlier version of FCP than 10.1 on Yosemite. (which I resent I have to say, they didn't have to do that).
I have sorted my immediate problem by stopping the App Store App from automatically looking for upgrades, which somebody already suggested and I should have checked.
A secondary issue was that I think Yosemite has already been downloaded in the background though and is on my machine already. I wanted to see if I could throw it away, partly to free up any space it's taking. So have had various conversations about that with people on here. But if it is downloaded I can't find it anywhere! I suspect it's hiding somewhere in the system files but I don't know how to find it. Anyhow it's not that important, so I've let it go.
Thanks.
