Collections Feature on iPhone

I have a few questions about the Collections feature in iPhone.

1. How do you turn off this feature?

2. I have the photos from my iPhone backed up into iPhoto on my iMac. But those same ones I see in Collections on my iPhone, are these the original ones that still reside on my iPhone or just small thumbnails?

To turn off collections, try using iCloud Photo Library. Turn it on at Settings > Photos & Camera (or at Settings > iCloud > Photos).

Collections do reside on the iPhone. But you can switch to iCloud Photo Library if you wish.

UPDATE: I just noticed you say you are using a dated version of OS X. The current version (10.10.3) is the one that introduces the Photos app and begins to support iCloud Photo Library.
