Can documents created in Pages with the MathType plug-in be read on a Windows machine?

I need to write documents containing equations. If I write documents in Pages using the MathType plug-in is it possible for an editor using MS Word on a Windows machine to read the document? In other words, does MathType render the Pages documents unreadible in Windows?

Pages documents are unreadable in MS Word. Only Pages can open Pages documents (and this is a generality). You would be better off using Word in Office for Mac and exchange that native MS Word document format with its Windows MS Word counterpart.

From Pages, you would have to export to MS Word document format, and hope that 1) the translation from .pages to .docx does not compromise the MathType content, and 2) that the MathType generated on the Mac side, remains compatible with the Math facility within Office 2010/2013 for Windows.

With regard to 1), forget it. Equations will either be images that can't be edited, or will not be visible at all, depending on your version of Pages. See the end of this article: http://www.dessci.com/en/support/MathType/works_with.asp#!target=apple_pages_mac

WRT 2) they are compatible, as long as the recipient runs the "Convert Equations" command on the MathType tab in Word for Windows and on the MathType menu in Word 2011.
