desktop auto cleanups automatically for no reason

Hi there,

I have a laptop which is choosing to auto clean the desktop, that is to say that this laptop decides it should move my desktop items from where i want them to ordered alphabetically. It will do this randomly, with the most recent time occuring when a growl alert, or message notification appeared on my screen.

There is no rhyme or reason.

All settings related to auto cleanup have been disabled and checked.

I have no idea where to start with this. All help it greatly appreciated.

So you have checked Finder > View > Show View Options and set the option to sort to 'none'?

Yes this is correct. The sorting only happens at random times (days, weeks inbetween events). Its not continuous or even has a pattern.

As i mentioned the last occurrence was a growl/alert notification. That makes no sense why that would trigger a cleanup/auto sort.

Are you referring to the Growl app? Is the version you are using the latest and/or compatible with your OS version? I don't have it installed, so I don't know if it could cause some instability (that can happen with any third party app).

That was just one example of how arbitrary the desktop clean up is. It has also done it when moving folders, and opening applications.

Well, OS glitches are quite often dealt with by reinstalling; you can use the recovery (Command + R during boot up); it will not remove any files, but it's best to have a backup anyway.
