Q: Why does iTunes have trouble imorting from a CD?

Why does iTunes have trouble imorting from a CD? Sometimes it just rejects the CD without starting, at other times it gets stuck in the middle. Is this iTunes or my computer (late 2009 version running Yosemite)?

Something as erratic as that suggests to me it is likely an issue with the optical drive, especially if it is now 6 years old.  You can try a drive cleaning disc but realize you are lucky to get more than 5 years or so out of an optical drive.  Drive do tend to invite the collection of dust as computers draw air in for cooling and if you have a slot type drive it is particularly inviting as an intake of all the stuff suspended in the air.

Thanks for your time Limnos, I'll try the cleaning disc or maybe see how much a replacement drive is at the Apple store.

An Apple replacement may be horribly expensive if the service people don't simply look at you in amazement that you would even be in possession of so old a relic as a 5 year old computer.  It truly is considered vintage by Apple even though you and I would look at it and see a perfectly usable machine.

I would instead consider purchasing a third party (cheaper than Apple) external optical drive which could be used with the next computer you own which likely won't have an internal optical drive at all.
