Logic Pro Won't start (Not Responding, NOT vsts, coms,au,reinstall)

My god this is becoming frustrating.

OK so a few weeks ago I was using logic

The program was running fine. I became tired and went to bed. I woke up and opened logic. (The file I was working on the night before)

I thought that maybe my file became corrupted because, when I tried to open the project nothing would happen.

When I would click the Icon in the tray it would say that (Logic is not responding.)

Turns out all my files do this... OH must be LOGIC.

After trying all the basic stuff

Delete VSTS

Re install Logic.

Delete com files.

Restart.

Uninstall Pro tools..

BLAH

blah blah.

I can not seem to find a single thing that is happening exactly like my situation.

I finally gave up and said Ill just re image my laptop" After backing up every thing to an external...

So I've wiped the partition and have done a clean install of both logic and Yosemite.

I get this far now.

I've clicked decide later and click any one of the options. And goes right back to what was happening before.User uploaded file

THIS!! 😠

User uploaded file

And nothing happens if I wait. It might eventually crash or something and want to send an error report.

I just don't get why even with a complete clean install of both that this would still be happening.

My mac book is more than capable of running this.

I've been using it for over a year now and then this...

Please help.

I need some other solution or a patch that fixes this.

This is getting ridiculous.

I had not updated to Yosemite when this problem began.

The problem persisted "before and after" I updated.

I only updated in hopes that too would fix it.

It was worth a shot after trying every thing else.

I was and still am using the most recent version of LPX.

I just don't get how something can work one moment and then just be so messed up the next without me even doing anything to the system.

I don't believe it updated as far as I know. Unless it was a "silent" one.

I literally just did this.

Posting is my last resort.

Logic Pro X, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), I'm mad.

Just to clarify...

As you must complete the download of the essential content before you can use LPX.......

Did you complete the download and install of the Essential Content?

(Note:The Additional content download is optional however....)

If you did then...

Upload the crash log somewhere and post a link up here please...

And....

Run Etrecheck and post up it's report here too...

Thanks..

I've done etrecheck now.

I've uploaded it to

http://jpst.it/zLUX

And as for a crash Error report from my mac itself.

http://jpst.it/zLV0

Yes, the essentials are downloaded and installed as far as I know.

The essentials were already downloaded and installed before this problem started.

I did download the additional (Optional) material as well after I re-imaged my laptop..

Thanks

Josh 🙂

Hey Josh,

I could easily be misreading your setup (because you are using a Bootcamped Mac which I am not that used to...) but.....if i am not then...

The first thing that struck me... is that you appear to have moved your Applications folder or you are using an applications folder on an external USB Drive and not in the root of the System drive.... or something weird is going on with your bootcamped partitions...

Logic Pro X appears to be installed in this Applications folder that seems to not be in it's normal location.... If this is the case, this alone can cause all kinds of weird errors..

I think this because your System Drive is named Macintosh HD as normal..

Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 399.42 GB (383.87 GB free)

but your Applications folder and therefore Logic Pro, is being stored on a Volume called VOLUME

/Volumes/VOLUME/Applications/Logic Pro X.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Pro X

The next thing is you have been having several Kernel Panics along with other parts of your system hanging too...

Never a good sign either.. as KPs tend to be hardware related and it could be this might be connected to your use of external drives or something else amiss with your system...

Finally, looking through the log from the hang... there seems to be many issues going on all related to I/O for the most part.. again, possibly linked to the possible issue I mentioned initially....

If I am totally off base here.. and it's something to do with how Bootcamp partitions things I apologize.. and maybe one of the other regulars here might jump in with a better idea of what's going on.. but it all looks very odd to me...

Cheers..

That is more helpful than anything I've heard before this.

If you are talking about the external, that was hooked in to back up everything.(So I could re-image the partition, I had project files and vsts that I wanted to keep 🙂)

I have not had it plugged in when the issue began. I borrowed it from a neighbor.

Maybe I made a mistake of leaving it in during the install but, as you know this was happening before the re-image. As for the boot camp, I was thinking something similar, that maybe the issue has to due with the "windows 7" I have installed on the other partition. Or maybe it is the partiton in itself.

I even thought I should go as far as to re-image/wipe the entire drive.

Maybe boot camp has caused some issue in the drive.

I'd hope to not have to go that far but, if it it truly necessary I guess I'll go ahead and do it. (only when I know there is no other option)

Also, what you are saying makes sense, I'm just not sure how it became installed there.

It was working and then it moved to another location?

Odd 🙂

(Just to clarify, the thing you were looking at may have been the complete back up of my entire HD on the external.) Is there a chance that you may have been looking at that? Just to make sure.

I did plug in a new MIDI keyboard around the time that this all started happening, so as for the hardware that could have been it.

I just didn't think a small keyboard could do all this. I just want to know how I should fix it if that is the case, the key board is not connected any more.

I was borrowing it because my normal MIDI keyboard had broken in the power area so I borrowed a small keyboard from a friend.

It is a generic brand so perhaps its drivers or whichever did not work well together with my mac and logic setup and caused some sort of issue.

I'm not sure why it would continue after I re-image and don't plug in the (generic)

You might be on the right track with the hardware issue. I'm also using an AVID pro interface to connect and use my audio.

(I've also tried removing that)

I'm just wondering how to get this program to work again even when nothing external is plugged in.

So more food for thought to help.

I really appreciate your time brother.

Just to quickly clarify as Im pulling an 'all nighter' in the studio tonight so Ill keep this brief...

It seems that somehow you are running Logic Pro off your backup drive and not your System drive...

This is the path that the crash log is showing for the copy of Logic that is running and hanging..... (Red highlight added )

Note: Again, I could be reading this wrong due to the fact you are using Bootcamp... and Volume may indeed be your internal System drive... I just don't know for sure...

/Volumes/VOLUME/Applications/Logic Pro X.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Pro X

Whereas your System drive appears to be the more normal;

Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 399.42 GB (383.87 GB free)

So the path to Logic should read as.....

/Applications/Logic Pro X.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Pro X

or....

Macintosh HD/Applications/Logic Pro X.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Pro X

If the drive labelled Volume is in fact your external backup drive which it appears to be from the Etrecheck report... then yes, an external Keyboard or other external USB device, could be interfering or conflicting with your I/O to the external USB drive.... generating hangs and crashes... as well as Kernel Panics...

I would check you are not somehow running a shortcut/alias to the external drive version of Logic Pro.... by navigating manually to your System Drive's Applications folder and launching Logic Pro from there and see if that makes any difference..

Also, you could try shutting down your Mac, (Important to do this rather than just unplug) unplug everything external to the Mac...including any USB drives etc... restart and launch Logic and again test to see if it continues to hang.... If it doesn't that should point you in the right direction as to what is causing the problem.

Failing all of the above.. try deleting Logic's prefs... including the CS prefs

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the "com.apple.logic10.plist" file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you've programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You might want to export your custom key commands before performing this step.
  6. Remove the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder. (Note this is the control surface settings file. You may need to set up your control surfaces again after deleting this)
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of the files listed, you did not follow the instructions exactly as written! 🙂

and again test afterwards...

I'll check back when i have finished work to see if you have had time to try any of this out and reported back... If you haven't then no probs.. Ill check again once i have got some sleep! 🙂

Cheers..

First of all I removed the external and started LPX.

It created a question mark.

I navigated to the APPS folder and found that LPX was not there.

Before the re-image it had been though.

I think this was just something else that arose out of re-imaging.

I reinstalled and LPX still hangs.

I went ahead and restarted and unplugged all hardware.

Still persists. I've already tried the com files.

But just for the sake of knowing for sure I will try once more since I'm on a clean install of Yosemite now.

Jun 27, 2015 9:02 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

OK update.

I did not solve my issue but I have found a work around.

The way I do it is I view packaged contents and go into the terminal launch under macOS.

It still says "not responding" but as soon as I close the terminal window the program loads like normal.

This isn't completely fixed but maybe this can point someone in the right direction.

My good ness. I'm glad to at least be able to use it.

Thanks for the help so far brother.

Just to confirm;

1) This is after you reformatted the internal HD and installed just OS X and Logic Pro X and nothing else?

2) You didn't restore from any backups?

3) You didn't plug in any external hardware?

4) The Essential content installed without issue. It stalled during the download/install of the additional content? (Did you test before you tried to install the additional content?)

If all four are true.... then this indicates a hardware issue of some kind.... with your Mac

or....

With your home network/router/modem/ISP...especially if it stalled during the Essential content download...... and it did this before you tried to install the additional content.
