Q: Migrating from Photo back to iPhoto on Yosemite

I just got the new Macbook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.3 and there is no more iPhoto.  First, I don't get why this was done, because the Photo application seems to be so limited compared to iPhoto.  When I migrated my iPhoto library to Photo, all my albums were collapsed into one big one.  That said, I would like to go back to iPhoto and I hear that I need at least iPhoto 9.6.  What's the best way to do this?  Should I keep the Photo app installed?  Do I delete my Photo library and then re-copy the iPhoto library from my old computer back onto my new one with iPhoto 9.6 installed?  Thanks for the help.

Yes, definitely, keep Photos installed.  It is not a separate application but installed as part of the system, just like Contacts or Mail, and other applications may rely on its presence. Just remove the icon from the Dock and ignore Photos.

But first try, if you are able to install iPhoto 9.6.1.  It will depend on the way you originally got iphoto on your old computer. You need to own a version of iPhoto that is associated with your Apple ID at the Mac AppStore, because Apple stopped selling iPhoto and you can only reinstall versions you already own, but not update or buy iPhoto.

Check, if iPhoto is showing among your Purchases on the Purchases tab of the AppStore.  If yes, you can install it on your new Mac by downloading from the Purchases tab.

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

Check your Pictures folder. You should be seeing the new Photos Library and the original iPhoto Library with an extension "migratedphotolibrary".

When you launch iPhoto again, it will give a warning, that the library has been migrated. Just confirm, that you want to open iPhoto, and it should open the library again.  You don't need to delete the Photos library, it does not need much additional space, but you can. (Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support)
