iPhone won't charge, just keeps rebooting

My iPhone 5s is stuck in this infinite loop when I try to charge it. I have the low battery "plug in now" screen on my phone. So I plug it in and it starts this cycle:

  1. Phone charges to the point where it is able to boot up.
  2. Phone boots up and Apple logo appears.
  3. Phone gives 2 quick vibration buzzes.
  4. Phone starts powering down with the gray spinner on the screen.
  5. Return to step 1.

This has been going on for hours, and although my phone is plugged in the whole time, the battery isn't getting any more charged. Any advice as to what to do to get my phone out of this infinite reboot loop would be greatly appreciated.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3

Force your device to start. To do this, press Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and hold them for at least 10 seconds.

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on the phone.

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Press and hold on the Home button
  • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

If this does not help, take a look these Apple Support articles:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support

Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

As a final step, try the recovery mode. Turn your device off, then plug it to your computer with the home button pressed. You will need to have iTunes installed on this computer. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the iTunes logo on the screen of your iPhone. After that on your computer you should see the iTunes window saying your iPhone needs to be restored to factory settings. Click on the restore button.

During each infinite reboot loop, here was a brief window of time where iTunes was able to recognize my phone as being plugged in. Holding down both buttons immediately when that happened allowed me to go into Recovery Mode (iTunes logo + plug appears on screen). From there, it ended the loop and my phone was able to start the recovery process.

It is now back in full working order, and I didn't even need to restore from a backup. Thanks!

Inspect the charging port area for dirt/debris/fluff build-up that may be preventing a good connection and use a wooden toothpick, soft clean toothbrush, or a can of compressed air to clean it. Also look for bent or broken pins. Try another cable and/or charger block (be sure to always use a genuine Apple certified brand) in a known good outlet. If you're using a USB port, try another port. If you're using a hub, try a direct connection. If you're using a USB port in the front of a desktop computer, try one in the back. If all these fail, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar to have the device evaluated.

I've had 2 iphone 5's do this in the past 5 days... absolutely ridiculous.

Both out of warranty. both doing the same thing. I am SOOOO over apple products. My Samsung comes tonight. What a waste of money.

Constant reboot mode.

Just finally shut off and don't work. I've found there are hundreds of these stories posted with the same exact issue... coincidence??? Probably not.

If you've made an appointment and it goes past by 10-20 minutes, say something to someone! I've done that before and they've scrambled to help. I asked them what the purpose is of making an appointment if you still have to wait, and they were very apologetic. You've got to pipe up! I hope you can get your trouble solved but it looks like it may be a hardware problem. Best of luck.

2 of my iphones have just started doing this as well. It seems like the older phones are no longer being supported by Apple, forcing you to buy newer versions. I'm so angry about this. I have paid for so many phones over the years from Apple. There is no reason that the older ones should not still be supported. I was going to upgrade to the 7 but have decided to go with Samsung instead. I know Apple doesn't care that I'm not buying their phone but I felt the need to say it anyway.
