ipod won't let me sign in to icloud

My ipod keeps asking me to sign in to iCloud but will not take any user ID I have with Apple. I want to sync my calendars between it and my iMac and it seems all but impossible.

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 8.3

What exactly happens when you try?

Try resetting the password

Try:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Thank you so far. I reset and reset. I get:

Unsupported Apple ID

iCloud requires an apple ID that is an email address.

each and every time. This is a new iPod all up to date.

I can't even sync my calendar between it and my iMac.

soooo frustrating. Apple has gone the way of Microsoft. So sad. Intuitiveness is long gone. Old Steve would have his hands on throats if he saw what it has come to.
