Q: Safari consistently "hangs up" on Facebook

This problem just began a few days ago, around June 20th, 2015. I've previously had no trouble using Safari on Facebook, but now the browser

constantly gives me the spinning beach ball as I'm trying to scroll through my news feed. So much so that Safari is unusable for me on Facebook.

I have to switch to another browser. This is highly irritating and I don't know what could be causing it.

Chances are you have installed some adware or have something else blocking it. Please post an EtreCheck report of your computer and we can look for obvious issues.

The most obvious issue is you installed CleanMyMac3 which is considered malware by many experienced users on these forums. Uninstall that immediately and then run another EtreCheck report and post it so we can verify it is off your computer.

OS X does not need any cleaning, antivirus, or other third party utilities to maintain itself. All it needs is to be kept up-to-date and also a small amount of common sense.

    The common sense:

    • If you get an ad,  pop-up, e-mail or phone call advising your computer has been compromised, this is a SCAM!
    • Never download anything from a torrent site.
    • Keep OS X up-to-date.

Oh, and for the record, removing all the CleanMyMac stuff hasn't resolved the Safari/Facebook hangup issue. I was hoping!

You are correct, I don't see anymore CleanMyMac files listed anymore. I do note that your computer may need a RAM upgrade as it is using SWAP RAM to get work done. Try testing the computer to see if the original issue has been handled. Don't forget to restart the computer first and it would not hurt to first start in Safe Mode (Hold down Shift Key on restart) which will clear some caches. After you have restarted in Safe Mode restart normally and test.

If the computer seems slow then consider buying some RAM to upgrade. While Yosemite will run in 2GB, 4GB is considered the absolute minimum by most experienced users. If you upgrade the RAM that will give Yosemite more "head room" to work and you should see a slight speed improvement.

The RAM upgrade I mentioned in my last post I believe will address the hangup issue. If you want to monitor how your RAM is being used please carefully look over Apple's Use Activity Monitor to read system memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier) - A…, if you understand how your RAM is being used then you can manage it more effectively.

If you do decide to upgrade the RAM, then I would recommend only using Crucial (buy direct) or OWC (www.macsales.com) RAM. The reason is iMacs tend to be sensitive to RAM, they do best when using high quality RAM and both suppliers mentioned can provide that.

Thanks for all your help! You're probably right.....I've suspected my RAM was maxed out when I realized that in order to use Photoshop, I had to close out all other running programs.....and even then I had frequent crashes. Also, the granddaddy of all browser memory hogs, Chrome, was pretty much unusable for me too. I'll do the RAM upgrade, and thanks for your recommendations on what to buy! You're awesome and thanks for taking the time to assist!
