target display mode late 2013 mbp & 21" imac

I have a late-2013 mbp & late-2013 21.5" imac and I can not get target display mode working. Both running the latest OS.

If Iook in the system profiler on both macs show a cable connected. If I look in network settings on the imac it shows a network connection but the mbp does not, I'm not sure this is useful information but I'll add it anyway.

hitting fn-cmd-F2 on the imac doesn't result any display changes.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

You connect both using a Thunderbolt cable. Boot the MBP into TDM. You should then be able to switch it's display on the iMac.
