Hi
i have a iMac with Mac os X 10.7.5 and it recently started to fail to read any disc i insert.
i cant even hear the sound of the disc spinning and after a few seconds it just ejects.
i've read a lot in forums and nobody seems to give a different answer to this issue other than "replace the disc reader".
i really dont want to do that. Any help is welcome.

The SuperDrive may be dirty or failing. You can get a CD/DVD cleaning kit at your local office supply store, if that does not fix the problem consider getting an external drive.
Thanks, i already used the cleaning kit i have, it didnt do the trick, im starting to think im gonna have to buy that external drive.

I'm incline to recommend something from the LG line, but prefer desktop models over portable models.
I have an LG GE24LU20 that works great with all of my Mac's. The latest version like mine is the >LG GE24LU30
If I was looking for a more affordable portable, I would most likely go for one like the > LG GP60NS50
I'm having the same issue, curious though, why do you suggest adding an external as opposed to replacing the internal super drive? Cost? I am out of my Apple Care so I'd be taking it to a certified repair shop, but I have no idea as to how much it could cost.
An external would be far more sturdy and reliable than any super slim, laptop style and vertically installed drive where the media can shift 1/100th of an inch. I had to have my Superdrive replaced twice and have been using an external desktop model for several years - it's not slim or sleek or cool, but it works reliably and can read other sizes as well.
