fractions in email

I need to have fractions show up as fractions in my mail. I don't know how to find a special character viewer. Yes I have it checked under keyboard in system preferences but where is it? If I go to the edit menu in email I have "emoji and symbols" but there isn't a single fraction in there. Lots of stupid faces and some math symbols but nothing that resembles a fraction.

I need them frequently so can you please tell me how I do this?

Thanks,

Susan

To answer my own question, I found Superscript and Subscript hidden under Font > Baseline in Pages. Then I had to apply Superscript to the 6, Use Default to the /, and Subscript to the 10. But I was not done yet. After pasting the reformatted 6/10 into my email, I had to type " inches" (note the space) into Pages and choose Use Default from Baseline to eliminate subscript from the rest of my text on that line in my message.

If anyone knows a less excruciating way to do this, please advise. Of course, Help has no instructions for this.

Other questions: Why isn't Superscript and Subscript in the Font Window? Why can't I add a fraction to the Emoji & Symbols panel? Why do I have to search for fractions in the Characters Window, aka Emoji & Symbols; why isn't Fractions listed in its sidebar?

After a long chat with Apple Support, here is the final solution. Read it an weep.

Making fractions:

If you don’t see the fraction you want in the Character Viewer window, here’s what to do.

  1. Choose Emoji & Symbols from the Edit menu.
  2. Choose Customize LIst from the pop-up menu below the red Close Window button on the top-left side of the Character Viewer.
  3. Click the checkbox for Digits - All, and then click Done.
  4. Click Digits - All in the Character Viewer sidebar. Use your arrow pointer to drag the right side of the window to expand it, if needed.
  5. Scroll down to the fractions row. The first set of numbers after the forward slash (/) are superscript; those following are subscript.
  6. Click a superscript number, e.g. 6; it will appear in the text box under the Search box. The caption “Superscript 6” appears underneath it.
  7. In the Font Variation area, click the digit (in this example, 6’s) until you find the font you want. The font name will appear in the text box, e.g., Helvetica.
  8. Double-click that digit in Font Variation to display it in your Note.
  9. Now choose the forward slash, and repeat steps 7 and 8 to display the slash after the numerator in your note, e.g. ⁶⁄
  10. Next, click a subscript digit for your denominator. If your denominator is 10 or higher, you have to click one digit at a time and repeat steps 7 and 8 for each one.
  11. When you are finished, you should have the entire fraction in your note, e.g. ⁶⁄₁₀.
  12. If you select the entire fraction and right-click the mouse, you can choose Font, and then Show Fonts from the submenu to display the Fonts Window.
  13. Use the Fonts Window to check or change your font type, face, or size.
  14. Finally, select your fraction, copy it, and paste it into your document or Mail message.

To add your fraction to the Text Pane in Keyboard System Preferences:

  1. Copy the fraction you constructed in your Note.
  2. Click the System Preferences icon in your Dock, and then click the Keyboard icon.
  3. In the Keyboard pane, click Text to display the Text pane.
  4. Click the + symbol at the bottom of the Replace…With list.
  5. Type your fraction in the Replace box, e.g., 6/10.
  6. Press the Tab key and paste the fraction you copied into the With box, e.g. ⁶⁄₁₀.
  7. Close the Keyboard pane window.

Now every time you type this fraction, it is replaced by the formatted fraction in the With box.

You don't need to load that in the Input menu anymore. It is in every Edit menu, unless the app doesn't support the standard menus.

ctrl-cmd-space gives you the character viewer in individual apps.

If yours pops up in mini-mode, click on the button on the right side of the title bar.

Good point.

Mail, Edit, Emoji & Symbols followed by a search for fractions gets it.

Thanks.
