Have you tried opening them with Numbers 3 (in your main application folder) rather than older version of Numbers (in a subfolder)?

To open this type of error, I had to shut down all Numbers applications, go to the latest Numbers application and open that one. Then go to the file sought, which opened.

    Hi Jim,

"aneroid"? Looks like automatic spell correction is doing its usual over-enthusiastic best to provide a nonsensical result. It's very good at that!

The error message means you have attempted to open a Numbers 3 file (which does not need or contain an Index.XML" file) with Numbers '09 (which does require an Index.XML file).

    Quit Numbers ('09).

    Launch Numbers (v3).

Go File > Open and choose the file to open OR Double-click the file.

While Numbers (v3) has grown significantlly since it's introduction, you may still find Numbers '09 a better choice for files containing features still not made available in Numbers (v3). If you have older files that use those features, you may want to keep the older version around.

    Regards,

    Barry
