Q: how to erase my hard drive with out loosing personal files

Hello I'm having problems with my Laptop, it goes to the apple screen and then shot off. I'm in the restore window ran Disk utility's and it gave me an error code 8. Its asking to initialize my hard drive but my files didn't get a chance to save them. Need some advise to initialized and recover my personal files like Photos, videos, receipt, invoices.

PowerBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Backup, then erase.

It would not let me in, it turn off after the apple screen with grey screen and a load bar shows and half way ...then shot down.

Boot to Recovery, use Disk Utility to image the drive to an external.

No PowerBook can run Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite. Please tell us what is printed on the display frame at the bottom.

If you have something different from a PowerBook (like a Macbook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air) you can get wrong advice if people fail to note the discrepancy in your Computer model and the OS version that shows in your equipment profile.
