plugin not playing wav files in safari

I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro (mid 2010) 2.4 GHz i5 with 8GB running mac OS 10.10.3, Safari 8.0.6 and Quicktime 10.4. My online voicemail system use wav files. I can get these files to play in Chrome (although the controls don't appear) but in Safari the Quicktime icon appears but does nothing. Similarly, when the voicemail is received in Mail 8.2 the only way to play the file is via Quick Look.
