Q: Macbook Pro 15'' huge fan speed

Hi

I bought my Macbook Pro few month ago and I found problem with it. When I check some JS applications in web or run some scripts which works more than ten minutes I see that my fan speed increase very fast.

Last time I checked tree.js examples (http://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_effects_anaglyph) and after 5 minutes I hear my fan. I check stats and I got this result:

--- CPU Stats ---

CPU temp: 64.5°C  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

--- Fan Stats ---

Total fans in system: 2

Fan 0 speed: 5803.0 RPM  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

Fan 1 speed: 5372.0 RPM  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

--- Battery Stats ---

Battery health: Good

Cycle count: 76  ▁▂▃▅▆▇  7.6%

Max cycle count: 1000

Current charge:  6741 mAh

Maximum charge:  8488 mAh ▁▂▃▅▆▇  100.6%

Design capacity: 8440 mAh

Battery temp: 34.8°C

When I close page, after 5-10 seconds fan speed starts decrease and after few minutes my stats was:

--- CPU Stats ---

CPU temp: 46.5°C  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

--- Fan Stats ---

Total fans in system: 2

Fan 0 speed: 2160.0 RPM  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

Fan 1 speed: 2001.0 RPM  ▁▂▃▅▆▇

--- Battery Stats ---

Battery health: Good

Cycle count: 76  ▁▂▃▅▆▇  7.6%

Max cycle count: 1000

Current charge:  7355 mAh

Maximum charge:  8488 mAh ▁▂▃▅▆▇  100.6%

Design capacity: 8440 mAh

Battery temp: 34.8°C

I catch this behavior a lot of times and it don't look good for my. Where problem can be?

Laptop:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

OS X Yosemite

Version 10.10.3

P.S. I already checked what causes the problem on my old Macbook Air and I didn't detect the same behaviour.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null

If you are running a CPU/GPU intensive application, that will create heat and the fans will respond accordingly.  What you have post looks quite normal to me.

    Ciao.

What the limit for Fan speed must be to say that this value is critical? I'm worry, because I didn't observe this behavior on my old PS and Mac laptops, and this speed and the sound fan create, don't looks normal for me.

There are temperature monitoring sensors that will shut the MBP if the temperatures start approaching unacceptable levels.  This will prevent damage to the MBP due to high temperatures.  Usually this will happen at about 105°c±.

Perhaps you should make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Perhaps your concerns will be allayed there.

    Ciao.

What program(s) are you running when you experience high fans speeds?

Most MBP models have a default fan speed of about 2000RPM. At these  speeds, the fans are virtually silent; you can only here them in a very quiet setting and if your hearing is top-notch.

The critical temps that can be reached before an auto-shutdown triggers are just under 212F/100C.

Please see this Apple article for information on things that can cause elevated fans speeds:

Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support

Also, anti-virus software and so-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" apps are notorious for causing stress to the system. If you have any, remove them and don't reinstall them--ever.
