It is a scam. Do not call the number.

Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the Shift key.

This happened to me too. From what I've read, it is a scam, and if you call the number, the Trojan Horse virus will then start to affect your computer. Just force quit Safari, and go to your desktop. Hold down the Safari icon, then click "open" when it appears. It will ask you if you want to open previous windows. Click "Don't Reopen", and it will be gone and fixed. If it didn't ask about opening previous windows, keep opening and force-quitting in the previously said manner until it asks if you want to reopen previous windows. After this you should be okay, I've had no sign of any viruses, and you don't need to worry. I've read up on the Trojan Horse virus, and it is said that it is a anti-virus pop-up (which can cause a virus of course) made by scammers. Be careful with what you download, I was trying to download a song that isn't on iTunes when it popped up on my MacBook Air.

I wish you luck,

That is absolutely not correct. There is no virus on the planet that can infect your computer just by you making a phone call. The danger comes if you call the number, then do what the scammer on the other end asks and install software to give him remote access. If you do that, you're screwed. If you don't, you're fine.

So feel free to call and have a little fun with the scammer - "I don't see a Start menu... no, there's nothing in the bottom left corner!" 😉 - if you want to.

I tried holding down the Shift key while starting Safari, but it didn't do anything. My browser screen is still locked. I called the number and gave the person access to my computer. I'm hoping my computer doesn't get hacked. The woman was actually very helpful. She told me to do what you suggested, but it still wouldn't unlock my Safari. I still had a nagging feeling that I shouldn't have called. I should have followed my gut.

Unfortunately, you've hacked it yourself, by giving a scammer access. It should be considered compromised at this point. She could have done anything she wanted, and there's no software on the planet that could do anything to guarantee that your current system is clean. You should erase the hard drive, then either restore from a backup made prior to the incident or reinstall everything from scratch. For help with the latter, see:

Sorry, that's what I meant. If you call the number, you are calling a scammer. The scammer will ask for access to your computer, he will find your information, and you are going to have some trouble. In other words-

DON'T CALL THE SCAMMER.

I tried to delete Safari (before I could figure out how to unlock it from the trojan horse virus message screen), but my computer wouldn't let me because it said Safari was necessary for my computer. So if I wipe my computer clean, will that uninstall Safari, allowing me to reinstall a clean version of it? Or will the same version of it still be on my computer after I erase everything? I don't want anything from before that could possibly be compromised to be on my computer after I erase it.
