USB hub - works only some of the time

When I connect to the USB ports at the back of the iMac, everything's fine. However, when I connect a hub, some items (like external drives, USB sticks, or even a printer) doesn't seem to want to connect.

The hubs are powered, and one even has some higher voltages connection for charging smart devices.

Is there a reason why my hubs are so inconsistent? How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Reset the SMC, this may take several attempts. Also, please only use USB hubs that have their own power source. DO NOT connect a bus powered USB hub.
