Q: Mac App Store updating doesn't work

My App Store has been broken for a while now, and I have tried all kinds of fixes, but none of them work for me.

Whenever an update is available and I click on "Update", the progress bar appears, calculating the time remaining. However, this bar disappears a few seconds later without filling up. The App Store then claimes the update has successfully been installed, adding it to the recent updates, but nothing was actually changed.

I have already tried resetting my file permissions.

Did you check the application that was supposedly updated to see if the version had changed? The App Store behavior you have noted is not unusual and is often accompanied by the LaunchPad bouncing in the Dock.

The main problem for me is system updates. The App Store doesn't ask me for a restart, and after a manual restart, the version in "About This Mac" doesn't change. The update just reappears in the queue.

Are you updating OS X or just some other application? This wasn't clear. If you have restart problems, then you have a problem on the computer unrelated to the App Store. From what you describe the App Store is OK. Try the following before trying the update for OS X:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Also, let us know if you have Restart issues when you aren't updating - just restarting.

Unfortunately, that didn't fix my issue. Trying to update the system or an app gives the exact same effect that I described. Also, I have no issues restarting my computer, updating anything seems to be the only problem.

My harddrive "didn't meet the requirements" for the update you linked, so I assumed I needed to update to 10.10.1 first. I downloaded it from here and tried to install it. It told me it would continue the installation after a restart and prompted me for one, so I restarted my computer, only to find that nothing was changed, and no installation window popped up anywhere during or after the restart.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Choose the version you have installed now:

OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

Sorry, I judged too soon. I can't "unsolve" this discussion, but my problem is only partially fixed with this. Updating normal apps works fine now, but system software updates still give the behaviour I described.

Give me an example of a particular update that isn't completing, please. What version of OS X do you currently have installed?

The Voices you will need to download in the Date & Time preferences. They don't update through the App Store. What versions of iTunes, RDC, and Safari are now installed?

Now, just so I understand correctly, are these installed and not working or they are not installed and not being offered by App Store as updates?

iTunes 12.1.0.50 and Safari 8.0.5. I don't know where to find my version of RDC. About them being installed or not, I actually have no clue. Whenever I try to update them, the App Store adds them to the installed updates, but doesn't remove them from the available updates. The version of the actual app doesn't change during the process.

I successfully updated my iTunes using the link you provided. It no longer shows up in the available updates. The Safari one however tells me to use the App Store to update it. Do you know if there is also a permanent solution to this problem, that will make the App Store work as it should again?
