these readings are completely different

which one is more reliable?

also are there any "istat like" programs (that are free) that u recommend?

You can use your Activity Monitor for most of the iStat info ...and this app. works great for giving me accurate Temps and fan speeds...

I recommend smcFanControl 1.2.1 - it has a temperature read out gage that takes the temperature form a cooling pipe next to the CPU. This sensor will generally give you readings that are about 5deg C higher than the CPU - so just subtract 5 and you got the CPU temperature.

Many CoreDuo CPU's have a flaw that keeps them from providing correct temperatures after few minutes of computer use. I got such CPU too 😟

If you put your mac to sleep and wake it up - it will again for few minutes show correct CPU temperatures

I also like the smcFanControl, which seems very accurate and reliable. If you want, you can download iStat Pro or the iStat nano widget as well, also for free, from www.macupdate.com

I just installed Fan Control program. It shows my right fan running at -1 rpm. Is that normal?

Yes, that is normal. The Macbook has only one fan.
