Personal SMTP Server not accepting user/pw from mail

I've the following problem with mail:
I want to read and send mail with my own little mail-server on a NAS-Device (Claxan SA113). Mail connects to the POP-Server there perfectly. But the SMTP-Server always refuses the connection "wrong Password".
This problem only occurs with mail. Thunderbird connects fine, as well as Entourage and Outlook on WinXP. So the problem probably lies with mail.
Does anyone tried the same thing with the mentionned NAS-Device or something similar? Thanks for any input.
