Time Machine appears to be confused about which HDD I am using

I have my Time Machine Backup on a WD ‘MyBook Studio 2’ External 2TB HDD set up as a 1TB RAID 1 device. It’s been working fine for about 5 years now.

A week or so ago I upgraded to Mavericks. No problem at first but the other day I wanted to see if I could restore a file from Time Machine. The oldest backup was 14 November 2014 so I should have been able to reinstall a font. Time Machine stopped showing any backups at all before the present day.

I went into TM Prefs.

At first it confirmed that the Oldest backup was in November last year and latest backup was present day. So I couldn’t understand why joing into Timr Machine to restore a file showed no backup before the present day.

As you can see from the photo, the display changed later so that it now also shows no backup.

I have temporarily turned of auto backup until I find out what, if anything, is going wrong.

Looking under ‘Select Disk’ my MyBook External Drive appears both at the top with the TM icon but also at the bottom with a Tardis icon. I changed it to the Tardis a year or two ago.

Would the different icon used on the desktop confuse Time Machine?

I’m wondering if I just need to use the “Use Disk’ button as shown in the bottom picture but I’m reluctant to do this because earlier this showed no backup available when the top copy (under Backup Disks) showed the correct date and usage.

On the other hand, if I use ‘Remove Disk’ and select the Tardis one, I am worried that I will lose the backups since last November.

I suppose I could delete the entire backup and start again but I would like to avoid that if possible?
