Hi My MacBook Pro 10.8.5 is running slowly. Can somebody still help me?

Hi a saw some threads where people were helping others to improve the performance of their MacBooks. If someone could still help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for any help. My computer runs fine at first but then dramatically slows after my computer goes to sleep and wakes back up if I am using more than one program (i.e. Chrome and Photoshop)

I ran EtreCheck and found that cleanMyMac is on my computer, I don't remember ever installing it but I know it is bad. Here are the results.

Problem description:

Mac running slowly after a while.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Thank you very much for your replay @linc. My computer has not hit the wall where it stops almost completely yet. It did however start to run a little slower at one point in which I captured these lines. It seems kind of weird because it seems like the times I wrote down and went to look at in the console, the console sort of skipped over those times. The following snippet shows a bit straight from the console where you can see the time lapse:

6/26/15 3:16:36.000 PM kernel[0]: Google Chrome He (map: 0xffffff800fb7eed0) triggered DYLD shared region unnest for map: 0xffffff800fb7eed0, region 0x7fff98400000->0x7fff98600000. While not abnormal for debuggers, this increases system memory footprint until the target exits.

6/26/15 3:16:36.462 PM com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.sleepservicesd[7182]) Exited: Killed: 9

6/26/15 3:16:36.000 PM kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 7182 [SleepServicesD]

6/26/15 3:29:18.220 PM com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.sleepservicesd[7187]) Exited: Killed: 9

6/26/15 3:29:18.000 PM kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 7187 [SleepServicesD]

from 3:16 to 3:29 there were no lines in the log that were produced. Is that normal?

If you do not have a Blackberry device, get rid of all the RIM software.

Here is another problem--your hard drive is nearly full: Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / [Startup]: 199.19 GB (15.86 GB free) (Low!)

You badly need to off-load a lot of stuff to a backup drive. A nearly full hard drive forces Virtual Memory, a slow workabout, to come into play, especially when you have so little RAM (2G).

Starting with Mountain Lion OS 10.8.x, I found that your really need 4 GB RAM to have a goo s user experience. Your Google apps are quite demanding for a computer with only 2GB RAM. In teh report it shows you using 34 percent of your available RAM for only two Google apps.

And CleanMyMac must go.

Jun 29, 2015 7:23 AM in response to kiloj757

In addition to Allan Jones' good advice I suggest the following;

A model identifier 4.1 MBP can recognize up to 6 GB RAM. I urge you to install that and the performance of your MBP will improve.

You also have Sierrawireless and Novatelwireless. Do you need both?

I suggest that you remove Google Chrome and all its parts. It is a resource glutton among browsers and you would be better served by using Firefox, Safari or Opera instead.

Ciao.

A program, or perhaps more than one, is at times using excessive memory, causing the whole system to be temporarily unresponsive. That can happen for two reasons:

A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)

Not enough memory for your usage pattern

Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.

When you notice the unresponsiveness, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab.

If the graph at the bottom of the window is in the yellow or red zone, click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select

View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory

from the menu bar.

If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, or if kernel_task is using more than about 1.5 GB, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.

The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.

Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.

"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.

If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:

sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total

where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Jun 30, 2015 11:20 AM in response to Linc Davis

Ok, thank for the great help everybody. I cleaned up my HD so it has a good amount of space now I think (126 free). I tried to remove all files associated with HP, RIM and novatelwireless/sierrawiresless. I use this computer at work and need Chrome because it has a panel app that is installed for Adwords and such that I need to use to generate reports for review.

I searched and could not find any remnants of CleanMyMac to remove yet the EtreCheck software still says they exist. I also uninstalled Flip4Mac but that seems to be sticking as well.

Hopefully your advice has helped @LinkDavis @AllanJones @OgelThorpe.

@Linc I will see if it improves, if not I will try and run the leak detection tips you described as necessary. The link you referenced "A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done." does not seem to be working for me.

I'm guessing my system memory is less now because I took this screenshot while running Photoshop and Chrome
