Q: Very few photos in icloud

My phone is almost at storage capacity.  My photos take up most of my storage space (I have over 7000 photos) so before deleting any photos from my phone I logged into icloud from my computer desk top.  I only have 128 photos in my icloud.   I have done a back up to the cloud today, but nothing changed.  How do I get my photos into my icloud?

OK, I read them. Thank you.  I feel kind of stupid and kind of overwhelmed.  And I still don't know how to resolve the problem.

I have only 932 MB available on my phone, which is a 32GB iphone 5.   The phone is using 14.4 GB for photos.     I have 191GB of icloud space available.

I want to delete most of those from my iphone, and keep them on the cloud.   I still do not understand why I can't log into the cloud and see all 7000.  (Maybe I'm dumb).  I'm picturing a giant photo album in the sky.

So...can I please get some advise on how to keep my photos (somewhere) and not have them consuming half of my phone space?

You can save the photos and videos to a computer to clear up some space.

Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC

If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on on your device, then you cannot delete the photos from that device until you turn OFF iCloud Photo Library.

With iCloud Photo Library turned on:

How do I delete photos and videos from a device using iCloud Photo Library?

If you want to remove photos and videos from all your iOS devices, Mac and iCloud.com, you can delete them in the Photos app.

When you delete a photo or video from your Photos app, it will also delete from your iCloud Photo Library and iCloud storage. You can recover your photos and videos from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days.

The idea is that there is one library being updated and viewed, but with the Optimization option set for Storage, your memory should be managed automatically according to this section from the FAQs document:

Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

    • In iOS, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
    • In OS X, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

When you say you only have 128 photos in your iCloud, where are you looking? iCloud.com?

And doing an iCloud backup is not the same as looking at your iCloud Photo Library.

The backups that you do to iCloud are images of your device at the point in time that the backup is done. Backups are used for recovering a device or for setting up a new device. You cannot view backups, however.

iCloud Photo Library is a cloud-based database that is automatically updated via any devices that are set up with iCloud Photo Library. Any additions, updates, deletes, editing, etc. is updated "real-time" to the iCloud Photo Library. The "syncing" is done automatically.
