Easy streaming from mac mini to macbook.

Dear readers,

I almost have a mac mini in the background of my network for downloading BitTorrent files with transmissionbt.

I know that i can manage the torrent by the web interface plugin.

But can a mac mini also be controlled from my macbook so that i can play movies from it?

Is this possibly with VLC Media player, or only quicktime? Is airplay involved? Do i need a apple TV?
