How do I get the Skype icon to show - and keep showing - on my dock? Or at least on my desktop? Other "non-Apple" icons stick on the dock, but not Skype.

Did you tell it to remain in the dock? Click and hold on the icon, move to the dropdown menus to the right when they display, Click on Options, click on Keep in Dock.

Drag the Skype application to the Applications folder, and from there to the Dock.
