Jun 26, 2015 1:28 PM in response to Danielle11281988by KiltedTim,★HelpfulThat's a late 2009 Mac Mini. Not an iMac. The iMac is the all in one machine.
That machine is capable of running Yosemite if you upgrade the RAM. 1 GB isn't enough to install Yosemite. That machine can accommodate up to 8 GB. I highly recommend you max it out.

Jun 26, 2015 1:29 PM in response to KiltedTimby Danielle11281988,Thank you. I am afraid I don't know how to "Max it out"...do I need some sort of external hard-drive?

Jun 26, 2015 2:26 PM in response to Danielle11281988by Shadowisper,By max it out, he means that you should buy extra RAM. Then you can have someone in the Apple Store in your nearby mall insert it for you, or you can use this link to learn how to do it yourself.

Jun 26, 2015 4:10 PM in response to Danielle11281988by babowa,It is not easy to add or replace RAM in your model - it is considered to be advanced skill level; in fact, the link provided includes this:
Removing or installing memory
Important: You should not manually upgrade or replace the memory in these Mac mini models. Instead, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider to install memory for you.
Apple stores usually do not perform memory upgrades; you would need to take it to an authorized service provider. Also, ask them if you can bring your own RAM as it would be considerably less expensive than buying it from Apple. If you can, visit this site:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/mac_mini/intel
Make sure that is the correct RAM for your model.

Jun 26, 2015 6:24 PM in response to Shadowisperby babowa,What tutorial? Are you referring to the link you posted in this thread:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4432
It doesn't "teach everything you need to know". Apparently you missed the salient part in it which I referred to in my post:
Removing or installing memory
You should not manually upgrade or replace the memory in these Mac mini models. Instead, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to install memory for you.
Now, here you can find ACTUAL installation instructions; skill level is advanced and professional installation is recommended:
