Q: iTunes Restore Error 48 (iPhone 4S)

I wanted to clean up (with the erase all content and data button) a jailbroken iPhone 4s, but it didn't work out too well, so I needed to update/restore to 8.3, but at the end of the process, I got error 48. Please DO NOT give me a Let me google for you link, because I DID google it, and DO NOT link the only YouTube video of this issue neither, because it is USELESS. Help me - and all the people who are facing this problem - find the answer. I called the Apple support few days ago, they said "It seems to be a hardware issue", but I cannot accept that, because my iPhone was working fine before I did the "erase all content and data" stuff. It must be a software problem, or something like that. I would appreciate your help. Sorry for my bad english btw.

Regards,

Peter.

Did you try and restore it in DFU mode? You should try that. Also check the cable your using - switch cables - try another usb - sometimes even using another computer can resolve the issue.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Thanks for your answer. I tried to put it into DFU mode, but I got the same error message unfortunately. Tried it on my MBP, also tried to install iOS9 beta, but still no luck. I don't know what can cause this problem.

Both 8.3 & 8.4 support iPhone 4S. It seems the problem is hardware related i.e.  problem with the iPhone. Should go to Apple store and get it checked out.

Here I am a year later and have run into this same problem.  My wife gave me her iPhone 4S to use as a spare, so I wiped it and did a restore and software update.  Error 48 occurred.  In searching the internet I see that Error 48 is a systemic problem with Apple.  With a modest background in systems, I know that when I plug in to update, Apple knows that the phone is a 4S.  If there is a problem with 4S updates, it wouldn't have taken Apple much effort to put up a screen telling 4S owners to stop... that the update does not work with the 4S... but they didn't do that... they allowed customers to proceed and the result is error 48.

Now my iPhone 4S does not work, where it worked before.  In my view, this is Apple disabling the 4S so that they can sell their newer phones.  This is no way to treat existing loyal customers.  Anybody have a solution to overcoming Error 48 that really works?

Same here... was working fine and a reset and wipe effectively bricked it with 48.  Unless by huge massive bad luck that whilst sitting on the desk connected it should manifest a fault, it's pretty shameful not to prevent 4S owners bricking their devices and then offering no solution

Sorry to read your story Peter, it is not alone on the planet.

Not an iPad but my iPhone 4S was bricked when updating to 9.35 on Monday.

Completely unable to respond or get screen activity.

Connecting with iTunes via MacBook gets acknowledgement but will not upgrade.

8 attempts to use MacBook and iTunes to upgrade gets Error 29 or -39 (on Windows) following Appltech directions. Why did iTunes report each time it was trying to upgrade/ restore it was doing a ‘Firmware upgrade’ ?

Strangely simultaneous event that software update coincided with exact timing of catastrophic hardware failure!

So says AppleCare/ Support- no I have no extended warranty and in NZ we get offered another 4S replacement for NZ$400. The same unit AppleTech says can die at any time! ?

A third party tech has checked phone for me and said “chip is corrupted” which is more specific than AppleTech report stated.

Despite talking with Melbourne and Singapore ApplCare techs, and no official reply from Apple  by email, they refuse to acknowledge an’update’ could disable a phone- despite the known precedents for this occurring! Dave
