The spinning wheel of death

Hy guys,

I have a problem on my six month old MacBook Air. I am getting the spinning wheel of death all the time. It all started a months ago, but since I didn't have a clue what the problem was, I just installed a fresh copy of OS. Everything was doing well until few days ago when the problem emerged again.

I have to say I use laptop just for work, all basic, Safari, iWork, email. No other program or app is installed, nor I use it for visiting controversial websites. I also type fast so the spinning wheel of death appears even during the typing (like now), or scrolling through webpages. It seems like it can't process all of the informations. I checked in Activity Monitor memory status: Physical Memory: 8GB / Memory Used: 7.55GB / Virtual Memory: 15.39GB kernel_task is taking 4,60GB of memory.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you very much!

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Something is eating Ram.

Your main disk is not far too full, although close. It is a SSD so it would be a benefit when at least 20GB is free, better even more...

1. you should absolutely get rid of Bittorrent: very unsafe. Uninstall completely. After that in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove it when it is there, with the minus sign underneath.

Restart, this should help a bit at least.

2. The USB stick is almost full, and it is probably not formatted for a long time, could also cause issues, maybe even a bad quality.

Is the issue is still there when you have ejected this USB "stick"?

What do you use this USB stick for?

I would format it at fat32 not mac os: it is much too small for backups, when you use it for backups by hand, Fat32 is good.

Since you have used Bittorrent, I propose to download AdwareMedic from thesafemac.com and run it. This site thesafemac.com is very interesting also to read from time to time.

Thank you for reply.

I was transferring documents to USB when diagnostic was in progress.

Thanks, for suggestion. I have downloaded AdwareMedic - no threats were found.

Do you have any suggestion forBittorrent alternative?

You have mentioned something is eating RAM. May I ask if there is possibility for closer diagnostic, program / app perhaps, to discover and eventually resolve underlying problem?

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Maximus

No I do not have an alternative for Bittorrent: all these torrent apps are very unsafe, they broadcast your personal data to unsafe sources, also the files you download with them are very probably manipulated to include infections. Read thesafemac.com.

Perhaps reformatting the USB stick as I said helps.

Be aware that USB sticks are not by a long way as good as a normal HDD and should better not be used for backups.

Ram usage is displayed very good in Applications->Activity Monitor: choose the cpu and memory columns. When the memoy column is on, you will see data underneath: Memory Pressure is a good picture, it should be green, memory used in the middle is the real memory used, click it and on the right you see specs, "cached" is basically free to be allocated.

Jun 27, 2015 5:48 AM in response to Maximus1885

still too much crap and leftovers that are eating ram. I think Photoshop eats less than what you have now.

do you need the elgato thing? do you need the tomtom thing, do you need the HP software? etc we are not ready after the earlier messages. I was trying to get you far enough to propose a "clean install", which means that you format the startup disk, then install os, then only install trusted software form trusted sites, and in this way have your mac cleaned from all the crap and scam software that was there. (BTW the AdwareMedic scan should have alleviated the Ram eater already, it should have eliminated Genieo and maybe more).

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Lex, once again thank for your kind help 😉

As mentioned earlier, I only have and use pre-installed Apple programs (iWork, Safari, Mail). The ONLY two programs downloaded from web are Bittorrent (already uninstalled as suggested) and VLC. No other extra program is downloaded or installed on my computer. No games as well.

However, I have closed some tabs in Safari, restarted a laptop and problem seems to be gone! 😀 I don't know for how long but so far so good. I will keep you posted.

Dear Lex,

As you have been so amazingly helpful, I was wondering whether you could help me too please? I only appear to have this problem on one of my iMac accounts. OS Yosemite 10.10.3. I have dowloaded the etresof.com and it's popped a copy of the findings on a clipboard (I am complete novice and don't know where to access this clipboard). It appears to only be an issue on one out of 5 or 6 users on this system. It's all family members etc. I am running Parallels on the offending system, and use a graphics program called Serif PagePlus x6 and believe that it has recently told me that the version of Windows is dodgy and I have am trying to get that sorted with a fresh product key, but I can't do anything on that account now as all I get is this silly spinning wheel, and I am having to actually switch the machine off and on again. Like I say, it is working fine on any of the other user accounts. Please HELP! I just found this:

You have to completely uninstall McAfee !

In general any antivirus app (Norton, Avast, McAfee, AVG, etc) works counterproductive as OSX has all sort of protection already built-in.

A litlle beauty treatment:

- in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove all entries, with the minus sign.

- Remove SIMBL.

- In Finder MacintoshHD (the StartupDisk)->Library->InternetPlug-ins folder delete both AdobePDFViewer plugins: not as good as the standard built-in PDFViewer.

- I am not sure whether TomTom software is compatible, if you do not need it, uninstall it.

Restart.

If you feel not sure if everything is gone completely, make a new Etrecheck list and post it here.

Have fun.
