Connect to iTunes, select the iPod - the Summary tab will show the total available memory for media storage. A "4Gb" iPod will typically show around 3.6Gb available, a "2Gb" will show around 1.7Gb. All iPods reserve some of their storage for internal operations, so the amount available for music is always slightly less than the actual total installed.
