Why is this set-up running so slow...

My specs:

New 2014 Mac Pro 3.5Ghz 6-core with 32GB Memory. Dual (2) AMD Firepro D500 Graphic cards

8TB external Thunderbolt G-Raid drive (1TB free space left).

Thunderbolt LG extra wide 34inch display.

HDMI out to a surround sound receiver and to M-Audio speakers. I have HDMI pass through to a 4K TV Display.

All apps and OS are up to date.

I am editing a full length doc shot in ProRes 422 HQ . Almost every touch or edit gives me a spinng ball for a few seconds and sometimes up to a 15 second lag. Also the video on playback on the timeline is stuttery unless it is rendered and even then it is not completely smooth. I do not have the 4K TV turned on. Basically very slow and almost always a few seconds of lagtime.

I am trying to troubleshoot the problem because this should be very fast editing with almost no lag given my set-up. I can only wonder if the HDMI out to the receiver is making the Mac think there is an extra display to run because the receiver shows up as a display in preferences with a graphic crad assigned to it?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.2)

You didn't say how many video streams you were working with, but if it's a multicam project, I could see where pushing that much HQ data around could produce some lag – even with a very fast machine.

Here is a list of slowdown tips that Richard Taylor published.

One thing that's on his list is booting into Safe Boot. It's something I routinely do as a kind of preventive maintenance and it's the first thing on my list when my performance starts to lag. I also regularly check Activity Monitor in Memory to see whether I'm experiencing any swaps. That has happened from time to time (for no apparent reason) and when it does I quit the application and purge memory.

Also, if you are editing with Quality in Viewer options set to Better Quality, I would change it to Better Performance and see whether you continue to experience any dropped frames.

Hope something here or on his list works for you.

Thanks but almost all of the items on the list that apply to me have been tried. My question is that given my set-up there really should be no slow down at all. I also tried unplugging my HDMI and sound outputs and all ext. drives. Still a really bad lag. I also run the memory-loss app that cleans up all loose memory but 32Gb should be fine anyway.

I can only think that the G-Raid is to blame, but these are one of the top drives to use for editing. I am thinking to look at other options but its an expensive one!

Yes, new user and as a guest and I get better performance - as expected. I say that because I have two other workstations used by assistants so I can see that my Macbook Pro it is running better than my set-up.

My point is that should I be expected to have create a new user every time FCPX drags? I did this before and it works for a few months then quickly go back to slowness. It also takes days to troubleshoot and/or create a new user and lose all the original settings.

Should the tag-line for FCPX be "Works on brand new machines best".

The Mac Pro I use does not run any email and I use a Macbook for the internet just to safeguard my workstation.

I understand the new user setup, but if this is the only way to get FCPX to run at a useable speed then it's got a flaw. It should work in a normal environment like mine.

I would add that I am using Colorista III for color correction rather than Apple's color effect and I think this is adding to the slowness. I posted on their forum, so hope to get a response.
