can i put ram from a mid 2012 macbook pro into a early 2011 macbook pro?

hi all,

so i'm wanting to upgrade my early 2011 macbook pro 15" ram and i am wondering if the ram from a mid 2012 macbook pro 15" would work in my model? The ram upgrade would be from 4gb to 8gb and consisting of 2x 4gb ram cards.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

This article details the RAM requirements for each model. If the specifications are identical, then you're good to go: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270

Generally that would be inadvisable due to the differences in RAM specifications between the two models. However OWC has found that their 1600 MHz RAM will work in a 2011 MBP. Macs are very selective regarding RAM so this may not be the case with all brands of RAM.

You may try it and see what happens. If no success, the best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
