Q: No sound in GB 10.0.3. Preferences are fine.

I just downloaded Garageband 10.0.3 and imported all the audio files from the version I used to run. However, when I try to play them, there's  no audio. The Garageband preferences are set to built-in output. The system preferences for the Mac under Sound are set to built in internal speakers. The audio works fine for other applications, like iTunes.  When I try to record new tunes, with the Garageband preferences set to built-in microphone  and the system preferences set to built in internal microphone, I get a prompt that says no core audio. Any advice? Thanks. Jeff

Did you migrate from a different computer or reinstalled the system?  If you used Migration Assistant, a part of your instrument library might be missing, because it does not migrate the JamPacks and the Instrument library, and then older projects may give this error.

I am not sure which audio files you are referring to with "d imported all the audio files from the version I used to run".  Did you transfer all missing files from

         /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/

    and

    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/  ?

The " no core audio"  error message can also be caused by incompatible midi drivers.  Do you  have any drivers or audio units for audio interfaces installed, that may need updating for GarageBand 10?    See:  GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Unexpected behavior with Audio Units plug-ins - Apple Support

I did must migrate from another computer -- also same operating system.  The files I was trying transfer, recorded using my old computer, are almost all two guitar tracks with no effects, sometimes three, with a drum loop that came from a third party I downloaded from a CD -- in other words, not the loops that come with Garageband. I use the Presonus Audiobox USB as an external soundcard to be able to hear to run the tracks I record through our stereo system. With my old computer, I was able to toggle back and forth between using the Audiobox for input and output and Apples internal mic and speakers. Would I need to update the drivers even when I'm using my Mac's internal system for input and output? Thanks. Jeff

If you install incompatible software, it can cause problems, even if you do not use it directly.

I don't use the PreSonus AudioBox , but the web page says, it does not need any drivers, so that should be o.k., if you did not install any software for it.  http://www.presonus.com/support/downloads/AudioBox-USB

Message to Mac users: The AudioBox USB is a class compliant core audio device. No driver installation is necessary for OSX 10.4 or above. Simply plug in your AudioBox USB to a free USB port on your Mac, then select it in your preferred DAW and record.

Any thoughts about why I can't get any sound from the program?  I did the initial installation in safe mode, but have deleted and reinstalled twice since then. Maybe I'm missing the basic drivers that are supposed to be installed with the program? Does the "no core audio" message -- I get that when I try to record a new file -- help solve this  puzzle at all?  Thanks.

I have seen this message only in connection with software instruments, when incompatible software is installed or a loop is using instrument patches that are missing from the Instrument Library.

Are you seeing any signal in the volume controls in the track headers and for the project, when you try to play the project, or is the problem, that nothing is recorded from the built-in microphone?

Is the format for your internal microphone set correctly to 44100 Hz?

Check in the Audio Midi Setup utility.
