Finder freezing

For the last 2 days my finder has been freezing and getting progressively worse. I turn on my 2009 Mac book pro and when I log into my user account it freezes the instant I click on anything and it never recovers. But when I log into my second user account finder works with no problem. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5

Thanks

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Do a backup.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Remove these 2 Safari extensions in Safari/Preferences/Extensions.

You have adware installed. Click the Click to remove link or manual method:

Malware – Adware removal – Apple Support

Or download this program which was written by Thomas Reed, a long time poster. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy. If you are uncertain about downloading programs, try the manual method.

Malware Guide – AdwareMedic – 10.7 and higher

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

You've got a LOT of adware and crap software installed! All of it needs to go, as Eric has pointed out.

One that Eric didn't mention, though, is BitTorrent. (I noticed you had a BitTorrent crash a few days ago.) If you are frequently downloading stuff via torrents, that's a very dangerous activity, prone to infecting you with adware (which we know you have) and even possible malware. That's an activity that needs to stop unless you want to risk a more serious infection in the future.

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode - Mavericks also Yosemite

Well, the problem is that the stuff you had installed may have left your system in an uncertain state. CleanMyMac, for example, has been known in some cases to damage the system to the point that it has to be reinstalled.

First, make absolutely sure that you have fully removed all the problem items. Run another EtreCheck scan, and if you see anything with the names that Eric and I mentioned still showing, then it didn't get removed properly.

If everything is well and truly gone and the Finder is still crashing, due to the presence of CleanMyMac, I'd be inclined to tell you to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup, then choose the option to reinstall. This will install over your existing system, leaving everything else in place, and shouldn't affect your data or apps in any way. However, it would still be wise to make sure you have everything thoroughly backed up beforehand, just in case there's a problem.

That may be a waste of time, or it may not, but at least it will guarantee you that you have good copies of all system files, which is in question on any Mac with CleanMyMac installed.
