Q: how do I erase a G-4 hard drive

I have an old G-4 tower that I want to discard, but not without erasing / wiping the hard drive first.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Insert a compatible Mac OS X(or on some G4s, Mac OS 8 or 9) install disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, and use the Disk Utility(or the Finder or Drive Setup) to erase the internal drive. Alternatively, just remove the drive from the computer.

Boot from your OS X Installation DVD. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu (or Edit menu.)

    1. After Disk Utility loads select the volume you wish to format from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

    2. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

If there is a Security option in the Erase panel, then click on it and set the security option to Zero Data - One Pass. Click on the OK button.
