ipad mini backup session failed

I am trying to backup my ipad mini to itunes so I can restore from backup later. But it keeps telling me the backups session failed. I've tried various tips that I've read on this board, however most of them were from 2011 or 2012. I have an ipad mini 2 and I am using iTunes version 12.1.2.27. Please help!
