Macbook Pro Early 2011 problems

Hi Forum Members, Im new to apple and am having problems with a MacBook pro early 2011 model that was given to me. Im not sure if this is in the right spot but heres my problem, when I first received the laptop it worked fine. Although it had all the information from the previous owner so I looked up how to reset the laptop. I went to disk utilities and wiped the hard drive. I was told to re download OS but the laptop says it cannot. I left the laptop for a month and it was turning on. I have got a new HD for the laptop and the OS X on a usb, although I have not installed anything yet.

Although now it wont even turn on, no noises nothing. The mag-safe light will only turn green when plugged in and nothing else. Also the battery indicator light doesn't work, the laptop Is completely dead. I have tried all the resets and still nothing.

Is there anyone out there will a little more knowledge that could tell me what to do or what needs replacing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards Richard.

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know know more information about your computer; size, exact year built, RAM installed and OS you're running.

If it's a 15" or 17" there's a recall:

You could try the following resets:

Reset SMC

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Reset NVRAM

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

If that doesn't help:

Try a hard reset. Disconnect the battery (open the bottom and pull the connector off. Use your fingernails.) and power adapter. Press the power button for 1 minute. Let the computer sit for 5 minutes, Reconnect and try to start up.

No? - Go through the same procedure and try to start without the battery connected.

The addendum to this would be to try a known good battery.

This would be for a "no start" scenario but basically it's the SMC reset w/ a battery you can remove.

Hi Sorry for the late reply, It is a 13 inch MacBook. I don't have the discs as only the laptop was given to me. It has 4GB or RAM, 500GB Westgate HD. that's about the information I have, I do though have a usb with OS Mavericks on it. But now I cant even turn on the laptop and thanks spudnuty but those resets did not help. I believe that one of the main Boards are shot I will try again later tonight.

Thanks for you help.

Here's the take apart for that model from iFixIt:

https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_13%22_Unibody_Early_2011

So you did take the bottom off and unplug the battery? Trying the hard SMC reset?

What does the MagSafe led show? Amber or green?

What does the battery light bar say? Push the button on the left side front. Flashing green LED ? or up to 8 solid green LEDs?

So standard troubleshooting for a MBP is to detach everything from the logic board: optical drive, battery, HD.

Deeper would be to detach the keyboard and try starting up from the power startup pads on the logic board:

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/turn-on-macbook-pro-laptop-without-power-button-lo cating-power-on-pads/

That flex to the keyboard is very difficult to deal with and is easy to get put back wrong. Note the insertion depth when you unplug it.
