I have exactly the same problem and can't figure out how to solve it. Trying to make a Kingston HyperX Savage 240 SSD work in a mid-2009 15" Macbook Pro.

Tried:

1. Replaced my HDD with the SSD. Suceeded in formatting the SSD with the Disk Utility from the Mavericks bootable flash drive but when trying to install Mavericks it gets stuck.

2. Installed Mavericks on the Kingston SSD via a SATA-USB Rack and everything worked fine. Booted fine from the rack but when placed inside the notebook it stops on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the loading circle below.

3. Thought it might be the SATA cable but tried to install it in a similar Macbook Pro from the office and got the same results.

4. Placed it in my girlfriend's Early-2011 and it worked flawlessly.

5. Thought about downgrading the firmware on the my Macbook Pro. After all this is a 6Gb/s SSD and our Macbooks have a negotiated link speed of only 1,5Gb/s...

What to do....?

You should have a 3Gb/s connection with your Mac so, change the SATA cable.

My Mac has a 3Gb/s connection. Just checked with MacTracker.

Was that not true, if not what is the negotiated speed (not what MacTracker said please)

Mactracker is true. And here is what System Report says about my SATA:

NVidia MCP79 AHCI:

Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit

I don't know why the negotiated speed is 1.5 Gb. There are two of these NVidia MCP79 AHCI. One for the HDD and one for the Optical Drive.

Some people says that the Negotiated speed is 1.5 Gb because it splits the 3 Gbps by two (the HDD and the Optical Drive).

I have the same Mac, some people talk nonsense.

Okay. After reading the ifixit testimonials there is a big change it's the cable.

I will consider buying one, although it's quite costly if I add the shipping to

my area of the world.

FYI

2009 MBP with 6Gb/s SSD.

When first fitted it negotiated 1.5Gb/s and wouldn't work, so I changed the cable. (which had worked fine with a slower mechanical drive)

Seems i can solve this more easily by just getting my Kingston Hyperx Savage SSD replaced by a Kingston Hyperx 3K SSD.

An user on www.mac-forums.com reports that he had exactly the same problem and Kingston support directed him to the 3K

and it worked.

The reason is that Apple in Yosemite has added a system extension (kext driver or by whatever name) in the parameter RAM kexts called signing. Ie that is not on the hard drive so it is always present from the start, so that a modified extension to support TRIM thirds stops working.
