Q: Can't sync videos from iPhone to Photos app

Dear Community,

I am trying to sync videos from my iPhone 6 to the Mac Photos app. Just pictures are showing up, no videos. Do you have the same issue or do you know what I am doing wrong. I am running iOS 8.4 beta and Yosemite 10.10.4. beta. Thanks a lot.

Regards,

How are you trying to sync the videos?

Are you using iCloud Photo Library?  Are you using a USB connection?

    Or "My Photo Stream"?

My Photo Stream does not transfer videos, only the Shared album will transfer videos.   iCloud Photo Library should transfer the videos, but not all formats are supported.

However, we are not allowed to discuss any issues related to Beta software in these forum, sorry.

I am trying it via USB, phone to Mac. Maybe it's also an issue on 8.3? Thanks.

i've noticed that items will not show up in the import window, if icloud photo library is enabled on the device.

otherwise The problem could be caused by a corrupted video, that cannot be processed.

or your iPhone may need restarting or resetting.

I have this same issue exactly and I imagine a lot of other people do without even knowing it, since checking through your photos library to see if things have synced or not is not something you do every day.  I only realised it this morning when I was looking for a video I had just taken and discovered that it hasn't been syncing videos for a while, at least since the last update.

For the record, I don't use iCloud photos (I can't afford the server space to do so), I have it turned off on all devices and all my devices are set to sync and backup to my iMac locally in a standard way.  I use Wi-Fi syncing instead of USB but this is a non-issue as it happens the same on USB.  The pictures AND videos are supposed to automatically sync to your computer.  That's the way it's always been anyway.

The big problem for the end user is that this is stuff that's all supposed to happen magically in the background and we aren't supposed to have to micro-manage it.  Also, there are literally no settings available to the end user to control this one way or the other.  All that the settings control are what gets synced to the device, not the other way around.

It's 100% an Apple problem and I'm a bit shocked that this item has been lying here for half a month and no one has any information on it.  But then that's pretty typical of Apple support nowadays isn't it?

Addendum:  I just tried uploading a video (one of the ones stuck on my iPhone) to Facebook and it also fails, but without notification.  Facebook allows me to post it, I can comment on the post, and when I hit the upload button it *appears* to upload to Facebook, but never shows up.  So not only are all my recent videos hopelessly stuck on my iPhone, I can't even use them or share them.

As the original poster stated, this has nothing to do with iCloud photo library.

Also, in my case at least, corrupted video is not the cause.

The pictures AND videos are supposed to automatically sync to your computer.

That's not true. Not according to this Apple document: My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support

Which photo formats does My Photo Stream support?

My Photo Stream supports JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and most RAW photo formats. My Photo Stream doesn't work with video.

Videos have never been included in the My Photo Stream.

Maybe I wasn't clear.  I'm not talking about videos in Photo Stream.

I'm talking about when you connect your phone to your mac and sync it, the photos AND the videos are supposed to be transferred to your Photo library.

My error.  Have you tried the workaround of using Image Capture to download the videos to the Desktop and import from there?

    No problem.

No, I only just discovered this a few moments ago (although it's obviously been going on for quite a while), and I am still trying to figure out if the fact that the videos won't even upload to Facebook from the phone is related before I start hacking away.

I've had quite a lot of dramatic software fails from Apple lately that have shaken my confidence.

Also the very last attempt I made to diagnose an issue (with Pages) on these very forums resulted in me getting yelled at and nothing else. There have been several updates of the OS and Pages in between then and now and that issue remains unresolved.

A lot of times, (I would argue MOST of the time), the only one that can really help with these sorts of issues is Apple, and Apple is completely absent on these forums.  The only way one really gets help here, is if one is foolish or uninformed enough to simply be making a stupid mistake.  Those kind of things can be pointed out by more experienced users.  Stuff like this, where it's most likely an actual real software bug can only be fixed by the engineers, and as I said, they aren't here (or even monitoring apparently.)

I will try your suggestion later today for thoroughness, but I think it unlikely.

Photos is only at V 1.0.1 so is going thru growing pains.  The developers have tried to make it like the Photos on mobile devices and, IMO, didn't take into account the many Mac users.  They are beginning to come around as indicated bythe following paragraph in this Apple webpage: Apple OS X El Capitan.

Photos has been fine-tuned to make it even easier to manage your library. Now you can add a location to a single image or to an entire Moment. Naming your favorite people in Faces is faster with a streamlined workflow. You can also sort your albums — and the contents inside them —

There have been other reports of video files not being recognized and even image files.  Report your problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

Okay, I got antsy and tried Image Capture and it just presented more questions than answers so I'm going to have to stop and think a bit before moving on.

Image Capture shows all the pictures and videos on the phone when I connect by USB as normal, but selecting the video in question but while choosing "Photos" as the import destination *appears* to work fine, it does not actually import the video.  Also, according to Image capture I have hundreds of photos on my phone's camera roll going back for literally years.

This is partially my problem for not having checked my photos for so long and for trusting the Photos app I suppose, but the normal behaviour is that after each sync the camera roll should be wiped clean of the photos and videos you just imported to the library.  So, not only are the videos not syncing, but the photos *are* syncing, but not being deleted afterwards on the device.

It's all too strange and ****** up and Apple's UI around this is way confusing.  I'm open to the possibility that I'm just making a "stupid mistake" but I can't see that I am.  Also, if it's this difficult to detect said "stupid mistake" and this easy to *make* said "stupid mistake" then it's still really a fail on Apple's part it seems to me.

Where did you look for the videos in the library?  Did you try the Video smart album?

using Image Capture to download the videos to the Desktop and import from there?

    Did you try that?

Just tried that (to the desktop) and it worked which confirms that the files actually exist and that they aren't corrupt.

This doesn't solve my problem though in that I have to scroll through a couple of years of photos and videos in Image Capture, compare that list to the various areas of the Photos app, create a difference list, manually import to desktop, then import to Photos library from there.  This will take hours and also the dates will likely be stripped away.

Thanks for the suggestion and of course I will end up doing all that nonsense above if no other way is found, but I'd prefer that the problem was just fixed by Apple.  It makes me wonder how many other users there are out there with this problem that don't even know the have it.  What a mess.

Just click on the "List" button at the bottom

    Highlight001.jpg

In the list view find the Kind column and click on it;  Then you'll be able to scroll down to the Movie grouping, select all of them to import to the Desktop:
